EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

For IAS Post

  • A candidate must hold a Graduate degree from any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.

For IFS post

  • A candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree with at least one of the subjects namely Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics and Zoology or a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Forestry or in Engineering of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination
This is an objective-type screening test, consisting of two papers: General Studies Paper I and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). The Prelims serve as a crucial screening test, reducing the number of candidates from lakhs to a few thousand for the next stage.¹

Stage 2: Main Examination
This is a descriptive written examination, comprising nine papers, each lasting 3 hours. Two of these papers are qualifying with a requirement of 25% marks, while the remaining seven are merit-based papers, determining the cut-off for the UPSC interview stage.

Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
This is the final assessment for candidates who clear the Mains. The Personality Test evaluates leadership skills, communication skills, and spontaneous decision-making, among other qualities required to become an administrator.
